The arrest stemmed from an incident on Monday, April 8 just before 5 a.m., when a victim was struck on Buena Vista Avenue between Main Street and Dock Street in Yonkers, according to Yonkers Police.
Arriving first responders found an unconscious woman in the street and tried saving her life before rushing her to a nearby hospital. However, she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead, police said.
The victim was identified as Yonkers resident Fateema Respress.
Following the crash, detectives arrived at the scene of the hit-run to investigate. This effort revealed that Respress had tripped and fallen into the roadway before being hit by a black SUV traveling north on Buena Vista Avenue while she had been trying to get up, according to authorities.
The SUV then drove off from the scene, police added.
This vehicle was eventually found by police later in the day on Monday, leading to the driver's arrest. The suspect, identified as Yonkers resident Geneby Clase, was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, a felony.
Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza praised his department's success in finding Clase soon after the hit-run.
"This Department and our dedicated members will never stop championing justice for victims of any crime in this City. We will continue to do so, as is our duty to the community we serve," Sapienza said.
